Pipe sizes are usually standardized, meaning you can match the plug’s stated size range to your pipe’s internal diameter (ID). Pipe plugs have a minimum and maximum size range, so ensure the plug you choose is compatible with the pipe size you are working with. An undersized plug won’t seal off the pipe, while an oversized plug can be a safety hazard. If you cannot identify the pipe’s ID, measuring the interior diameter can work as well.
Use digital calipers or a pipe gauge to measure the pipe’s ID by measuring the distance between the inside walls, ensuring you exclude the pipe wall thickness. Measure at several angles to account for ovality and make sure the pipe is clean of obstructions.
Calculating the back pressure rating for a pipe plug involves finding the maximum force exerted by the pipe's internal pressure, based on the pipe's radius, maximum pressure (PSI) and pressure head.
